Congratulations to Keith Delman, MD (Surgery), Andrew Miller, MD (Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences), Raul Nogueira, MD (Neurology), and Barbara Rothbaum, PhD (Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences), the winners of the 2020 School of Medicine Mentoring Award!
The below information was pulled from the nominations letters.
Keith Delman, MD
Department of Surgery
"As a junior resident struggling with Imposter Syndrome, he recognized my internal battle early and before I even knew it had a name. He mentored me back to a place of confidence which translated to clinical success. Without hesitation, he orchestrated and supported my two-year basic science research sabbatical; he was pivotal in pushing me to submit my NIH F32 grant, which remains one of my most cherished accomplishments and would be non-existent without his mentorship."
"He has always gone above and beyond for his residents. He is one of the best leaders that I have had the privilege to work with. What sets Keith apart from other excellent candidates is that he loves to solve problems. The harder they are, the more excited he gets. He approaches discussions not just as a passive listener, but as an active problem solver. His enthusiasm is infectious."
"He is the kind of teacher we should all aspire to be. His every word of advice, demand for excellence, and gift of autonomy is intentionally designed to make his trainees better. It is absolutely no wonder that he has been the recipient of multiple teaching awards, both at Emory and nationally."
Andrew Miller, MD
Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
"Colleagues of mine are surprised to hear that Dr. Miller has consistently met with me weekly over the past 6 years. It is this personal attention that has contributed to my ability to submit high quality grant applications and manuscripts, and that has ensured that I am on track for establishing a successful, independent research career. He is a constant source of motivation and is a primary reason for staying at Emory for my career."
"Whether interacting with junior faculty, fellows or students, Andy brings the same patience and kindness, always emphasizing fairness and teamwork. He also makes a point to meet individually weekly with each mentee. This spirit of generosity with his time and enthusiasm for research is a primary reason that we and others have chosen to continue our research careers at Emory. "
Raul Nogueira, MD
Department of Neurology
"Despite having an international reputation in the field of vascular and interventional neurology, he is very down to earth and treats his colleagues and trainees with utmost respect and kindness. His passion to teach is exemplified by him having prolonged yet excellent discussions with the faculty or trainees on difficult and interesting cases, irrespective of the time of the day - be it at 3 AM, or late evening after having done multiple consecutive endovascular procedures with sleep and food deprivation."
"Dr. Nogueira training has been very helpful in expanding my knowledge and competency in clinical research, and education. Under his mentorship, in just a span of a few months, I have published 3 full manuscripts in high impact peer-reviewed journals, including 2 as a first author and already did a total of 10 presentations at national/international conferences such as the European Stroke Conference (ESOC) and American Society of Neuroradiology (ASNR) that included multiple oral presentations."
"The most notable aspect of Dr. Nogueira's mentoring is how he helps his mentees build their careers. He is always willing to share his experience and knowledge to find career-related information and exposure to various professional resources, opportunities, and networks. For example, when I was applying for residency and fellowship, he proofread my application package, discussed the strengths and weaknesses of specific programs and provided tips regarding the interview process in spite of his extremely busy schedule."
Barbara Rothbaum, PhD
Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences
"Dr. Rothbaum, despite her impressively busy schedule, always makes time to supervise clinical work, train others in evidence-based treatments, and discuss professional development. As a mentee, her experience in the field of psychiatry, especially posttraumatic stress disorder and anxiety disorders, coupled with her research excellence and passion for high quality and boundary pushing clinical work, makes her supervision of my work invaluable."
"She is a leading expert in PTSD and anxiety disorder psychotherapy and has provided in depth training and supervision to countless providers in these areas. I have benefited immeasurably by Dr. Rothbaum’s intellect, passion for advancing and sharing scientific and clinical understanding, and sincere and compassionate commitment to mentorship and training."
"Her excellent mentoring has helped me persist and thrive in my academic career. With her help I made it through the challenges of navigating being a new parent and figuring out the transition to independence. I know she has made similar impacts in the lives of many other early-career faculty and postdoctoral fellows in our department."
